Much imitated, Jasper Goodall has consistently reinvented and modified his output resulting in a body of work that is both extensive and incredibly diverse. His future output will see him focus on new works for a major solo show in New York as well as further development of JG4B, his luxury swimwear collection. He lives in Brighton, England and works above a print workshop in a 16th century barn deep in the Sussex countryside.
INTERVIEW WITH JASPER GOODALL
Q: What influences shape your work?
A: Fashion Photography, Japanese screen Print – Kuniyoshi, 70′s Graphics, Psychedelia, Tibetan art, East European folk art, Erotica, fetish and fantasy art.
Q: How do you prepare to work and do you have any creative rituals during your working process?
A: I usually start by trawling through my files of body parts. Drink a lot of tea and turn off my email.
Q: Can you describe a typical working day for you?
A: I drag myself out of bed at 7am, I’m not great in the mornings. I drink tea, go to the park to practice Tai Chi, eat breakfast and drive over Devils Dyke to work.
When I get to the studio, I make some more tea, answer emails & work, get lunch, work until 7 or 8, go home watch telly and eat dinner.
Q: Can you name some image makers, past or present, that interest or inspire you?
A: Helmut Newton, David Lachapelle, Ellen von Unwerth, Aubrey Beardsley & Erte
Q: Can you talk about the processes and materials that you use in your work?
A: Photography usually forms the starting point. I have a huge library of body parts and typically lots of photos will go into making one figure. Once I’m happy with the way the figure is looking I’ll start drawing in Photoshop. Depending on what finish I’m after its either left in photoshop for or re-drawn on a light box with pencil or pen & ink. Finally I’ll then re-scan the result back and continue working in Photoshop.
Q: What new directions and ambitions do you have for your work in the coming years?
A: At the moment I’m really interested in screen printing and I’ve got a lot of new work to do for a show in 2007 for which I’m aiming at dropping the computer for a while to focus on producing original drawings, paintings and personal work.
